Recap: MoodleMoot Malaysia 2024 – A Day of Learning, Networking, and Innovation

The inaugural MoodleMoot Malaysia, organized by ModernLMS, was a successful gathering of educators, technologists, and innovators, held on 27th September 2024 at the Corus Hotel KLCC. This one-day event brought together an enthusiastic group of 158 participants, including 127 delegates, 15 speakers, and representatives from 33 universities and 9 companies across 5 countries, showcasing the growing interest in Moodle and e-learning solutions in Malaysia and beyond.

Event Overview

MoodleMoot Malaysia 2024 provided a packed schedule of insightful sessions, networking opportunities, and hands-on workshops, offering participants a comprehensive experience of learning and professional development. The event featured a variety of topics centered around Moodle, ranging from learning analytics, gamification, AI integration, and personalized learning to architecture students’ engagement and Moodle site scalability.

Key Highlights

The event kicked off with an opening remark, followed by an insightful keynote from Matt Porritt of Moodle HQ on “Moodle 4.5 and Beyond.” This keynote set the stage for a day filled with expert talks and workshop sessions focusing on the latest developments in Moodle and e-learning best practices.

In the morning session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nurbina A. Shukor (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) discussed “Monitoring Learning Using Learning Analytics in UTM Moodle,” emphasizing the importance of data in understanding student progress. Dr. Yun Jin Kim (Xiamen University) conducted a parallel workshop on “Enhancing Cognitive Skills of TBCM Students through Moodle Quizzes,” which provided practical insights into using Moodle for cognitive skill development.

Max Espley from Moodle HQ highlighted the “Moodle Partner Program,” followed by a talk from Engku Badreena Engku Mohamad Zaki of Coway Malaysia, who shared “Insights of Retail LMS.” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hj. Zahari Hamidon (Open University Malaysia) provided valuable tips on enhancing frontend learning design through Moodle.

The session before lunch featured Jasbirzla Ilia Zainal Abidin (iSpring) who spoke on “Gamifying eLearning: Unlocking Engagement with iSpring Suite,” while Nurhanim Hassan (Taylor’s University) conducted a workshop on “Fostering Personalized Learning through LMS.” This diverse set of sessions offered attendees a comprehensive view of both the practical and theoretical aspects of utilizing Moodle to enhance learning experiences.

Afternoon Insights and Discussions

The afternoon continued with a thought-provoking talk by Sheryl Villaroman (Nephila Web Technology Inc.) on “Leveraging the Power of AI with Moodle,” while Mustafa Othman (Asia Pacific University) explored “Moodle Integration with OBE.” A panel discussion that followed brought together experts from ModernLMS, including Afrina Qistina & Atikah Shahrin, who elaborated on “Be Moodle Certified” and discussed the future of Moodle certifications and their impact on the LMS community.

Later in the day, Ts. Dr. Filzani Illia (Taylor’s University) spoke about “Transforming Architecture Students Online Learning Experience Through Enhanced 5-E Framework,” providing valuable insights into innovative learning design for architecture students. Adrian Hartanto from Moodle HQ concluded the workshops with a session on “Moodle at Scale: Performance Testing for Large Deployments,” addressing the challenges of ensuring scalability in large educational institutions.

Closing Remarks

ModernLMS CEO, Sam Suresh, concluded the event with a talk on “Open Source and Open Education,” reflecting on the power of open-source technologies like Moodle to revolutionize education and make learning accessible for all. The day ended with closing remarks, a lucky draw, and a group photo, leaving attendees excited for the future of Moodle in Malaysia.
